Saffron is a shade of yellow or orange, the color of the tip of the threads from the saffron crocus. These threads—actually the stigma of the flower—trap the pollen grains. Their color then turns reddish when dried.

Now it just so happens that in June’s story “Deadly Confrontation” in the December 2025 issue of Black Sheep: Unique Tales of Terror and Wonder, Katerina’s body was found covered in a remnant of saffron-colored silk. Miriam uses this information to confront the killer:

“The autopsy determined that Katerina was cut with blades like these.” Then on a hunch, I lifted the trunk lid and held up a roll of saffron silk. “In fact, this very fabric, drenched in blood, covered her body.”

“You’re crazy!”

“I know you loved her. So, why did you kill her?”

“For the same reason I’m going to kill you!”

Now it’s also true that saffron is the world’s most expensive spice. Derived from these crocus threads and with only three threads per flower, 75,000 flowers are required to produce a single pound. Moreover, contributing to the cost, all aspects of the harvesting must be done manually. On the retail market today, the highest quality (from Iran, Spain, and India) could cost about $30 for 2 grams, or about a 14th of a pound.

Once the threads have been separated from the plant, they are dried to preserve their unique, complex, and delicate flavor. Often described as a mix of earthy, floral, and honey-like sweetness with subtle hints of hay or metal, it is not spicy but adds a sophisticated warmth, aroma, and vibrant golden color to savory dishes like paella and risotto, as well as sweets.
