The dark horse is Theodora, the worst kind of woman scorned, still desperately in love but eager for revenge:

Leo never notified me that he was divorcing me and never returned my family’s estate and the betrothal gifts! That ring I gave him. A carnelian intaglio of a two-faced Janus to represent his life before and after our marriage. And three solid gold snake bracelets he said symbolized the immortality of our love.

I don’t miss him so much as remember how he used to make love to me, how our very souls would merge. And then he’d whisper, ‘You’ve taught me what love is.’ So, when I get weepy like this, the best thing for me is to get out of this rat hole and go to the agora.

In the agora, Theodora gets her idea for revenge, but not with a dagger:

Oh no, that would be too quick. Perhaps with an asp. Like when Cleopatra killed herself. Hmm. But no, then he wouldn’t suffer. I’ll bet she tested that venom on a hundred criminals to make sure her own death would be painless. What I’d really like to see is him raving in madness, his eyes rolling back, and his face twisted into an expression of utter horror.

On the other hand, you should be quick to find out what Theodora has in mind. Hey, you never know. Just click here.
